Renting a self-drive car can be an excellent option—but international travellers should verify their driving documentation before reserving a vehicle.

This Onroadz Guwahati guide walks you through the documents we review, our standard rental rules, handover expectations and the travel permits that may apply to particular destinations. Documentation and permitted routes are reviewed individually; a request is not confirmation of eligibility.

01 / BEFORE YOU DRIVE

The six essentials.

Prepare clear copies for advance review, and carry the original documents for handover and roadside checks where required.

DOCUMENT 01

Passport + entry status

Valid passport and Indian visa or eVisa, or applicable OCI/entry-exemption documentation. Carry the original passport.

DOCUMENT 02

Home-country licence

Original, valid driving licence authorising the car category you intend to drive. Onroadz's standard rule requires it to have been held for at least six months.

DOCUMENT 03

International Driving Permit

Bring the original physical IDP recognised for driving in India, normally under the 1949 Geneva Convention framework, alongside your domestic licence.

DOCUMENT 04

Travel & stay details

Provide your hotel, homestay or temporary stay address, arrival information and intended route for verification and delivery planning.

DOCUMENT 05

Reachable contact details

Provide an active Indian contact number for local coordination and your primary WhatsApp number with international country code.

DOCUMENT 06

Payment & verification

Have a valid payment method and funds for the applicable booking balance or security requirement. The final payment and deposit terms are confirmed before handover.

Send pickup and return dates, pickup point and preferred vehicle. Standard bookings start from three days.

Confirm the details

Review the quotation, rental terms, mileage limits, pickup logistics, deposit and any destination permits before payment.

Collect & explore

Carry originals for handover, complete inspection and agreement formalities, and enjoy Northeast India responsibly.

Onroadz Guwahati's standard self-drive policy: minimum age 23 years, licence held for at least six months, minimum three rental days and 300 km/day included in standard rentals. Overage, delivery, security deposit, insurance, road restrictions and other charges depend on your confirmed booking. Please review the current terms and conditions before travel.

03 / KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Arunachal Pradesh requires extra planning.

Some Northeast destinations have permit rules in addition to Indian immigration and driving documents. For Arunachal Pradesh, foreign nationals should confirm whether a Protected Area Permit (PAP) / Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required for their nationality, route and travel dates.

Arunachal's tourist eILP is for Indian citizens; it is not the correct foreign-national permit. Do not assume that a rental booking authorises access to every road or protected area. Approval and route restrictions can change, and some areas may need locally authorised transport.

Can foreign tourists rent a self-drive car in Guwahati?

Yes, subject to eligibility, document verification, route suitability and acceptance of the booking. Share your original home-country licence, a recognised IDP and passport/entry documents before confirming your trip.

Can I use only my foreign driving licence?

Generally, no. India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways advises that a foreign-country driving licence alone is insufficient; a valid IDP under the applicable 1949 Geneva Convention framework is required. Carry the original licence together with the IDP. Official MoRTH FAQ ↗

Will a photo or digital copy of my IDP work?

For Onroadz document verification and vehicle handover, bring the original physical IDP and original driving licence. Photographs or digital copies can help us review documents in advance but do not replace originals.

Can I obtain an IDP after arriving in India?

Indian authorities issue Indian IDPs for eligible Indian-licence holders; overseas visitors should arrange their applicable IDP through their home-country issuing authority before travel. Parivahan guidance ↗

What are the minimum age and rental duration?

Onroadz Guwahati's standard policy is minimum age 23, a driving licence held at least six months and a minimum three-day self-drive rental. Other conditions and vehicle-specific restrictions may apply.

Can I drive to Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh?

Meghalaya trips can be considered subject to route and vehicle approval. Foreign tourists visiting Arunachal Pradesh must check PAP/RAP requirements and any local road restrictions in advance; Indian tourist eILP is not the foreign-national permit.

Is airport delivery available?

Guwahati Airport delivery may be arranged when offered for your confirmed booking; delivery fees and pickup arrangements are quoted separately.

What if I need a vehicle with a driver instead?

Ask our team about chauffeur-driven or cab options. This may be appropriate if your documents are not accepted, you prefer not to drive in unfamiliar conditions or your planned route has local transport restrictions.
